To reflect the continual development of the shipping industry as new products enter
the market and to include the new provisions of the United Nations Recommendations,
the International Maritime Organization published Amendment 30 to the IMDG
Code. Besides these content updates, the previous five volumes of the code have
been rearranged into two volumes and simplified for use.
AN INTRODUCTION TO LIQUEFIED GAS CARRIERS (EDITION 2)
Code No 753
Time: 21 Mins
Among the most specialised ships trading today are the liquefied gas carriers. They
have very specific cargo containment and cargo handling systems. This training
package, provides an introduction to these ships, their cargoes, and their safety
systems. It is designed to support training as required by STWC Section A-V/1.
The video has ten sections. These include a section on the physics of the liquefied
gases and sections on each of the most common types of gas carrier: fullypressurised,
semi-pressurised, fully-refrigerated and LNG ships. There are further
sections on ship safety, personal safety and cargo operations.
The video uses extensive graphics to explain and demonstrate the principles and
practices of carrying liquid gas cargoes. The links between the design of the ship and
the type of cargo are made clear.
Simply and clearly the film describes the procedures to be followed on the discovery
of an LPG or LNG fire, following through from the incident point to the raising of the
alarm, safe emergency shut down in liaison with the terminal, mustering of the fire
party, activation of the fire control equipment and the successful control and
extinguishing of liquefied gas fire incidents.
Designed to assist officers in their preparation for service on board gas carriers.
Emphasis is on the safety aspects of gas shipping, requiring a thorough
understanding of the underlying principles involved in the handling of gas cargoes
and the forms of reactions expected with the different chemical structures.
Finally, a description of commercial grades of cargo is given together with their
importance of temperature and pressure control on board ship.
Designed to assist officers in their preparation for service on board gas carriers.
Emphasis is on the safety aspects of gas shipping, leading to a thorough
understanding of the underlying principles involved in the handling of gas cargoes.
The video deals with the basic physics of gases and introduces the concept of
Absolute Zero, the laws of gases - Boyle’s law, Charles’ law, Avogadro’s
observations, Dalton’s Law on partial pressures and the General Gas Law.
Then the three phases of matter are discussed - solid, liquid and gas and the
transitions between them which involve Latent Heat. This leads to consideration of
Enthalpy and the effect of Pressure on boiling points. The use of Mollier Charts is
explained. The laws of thermodynamics are also considered and the applications of
these and the other laws to practical cargo systems is considered. The operation of
single and two-stage compression systems and of refrigerated systems all depend
on the principles we have defined.
The characteristics of LPG mixtures and the way in which these are affected by the
methods of compression are discussed. Finally, batch and flash vaporisation are
described.
The LNG Carrier Steam Plant Tutor is a complete CD-ROM based training package.
It deals with the operation of machinery found on a steam powered L.N.G. carrier in
a straightforward and down to earth manner. Emphasis is on plant operation.
The package can be used by a supervisor to gauge the level of a student’s plant
operating knowledge. Subjects dealt with include ship manoeuvring preparations,
parallel operation of alternators, testing of alternator safety equipment, the
operation of sea water evaporators, steering gear testing and the testing of boiler
water level gauges. Also dealt with are the firing of dual fuel boilers and the
operation of liquefied natural gas compressors including safety trip testing.
The flow charts are based on the procedures and checklists to be found in an ISM
Code Engine Room Information Book. The ISM Code requires the ship manager to
establish operating procedures and exercises to prepare for emergencies and
provide a response to hazards and accidents. The LNG Carrier Steam Plant Tutor
allows the student to practice for such situations.
In addition to the set operating procedures the package can randomly present the
student with a series of plant problems to be solved. The solutions to these problem
scenarios are only available to the supervisor.
The extensive help files provide information for students following routes to marine
engineering qualifications, for example the UK’s NVQ system.
