FIRE FIGHTING & SAFE CARGO OPERATIONS ON CAR CARRIERS
Code No 540
Time: 18 Mins
Ships which are built for specific duties have their own particular safety problems.
In the case of car carriers they range from general safety issues to special problems
of loading, stowage and discharge of cars and other vehicles.
By showing a typical working environment on board a car carrier, the package shows
the induction process for a new-comer on board. The new seaman is introduced to
the safety and operational manuals. He is then introduced to the emergency
procedures and we see him being given his own responsibilities. He is shown the
location of all the main fire fighting apparatus on board.
On passage, inspection rounds of cargo holds are shown, giving the correct
procedures. One inspection reveals a fire on one of the cargo decks. We see an
emergency exercise in progress. Reference is made to the use of local fire brigades,
if the fire takes place in port. At sea, the captain decides to activate the fixed foam
fire extinguishing installation, whilst on deck boundary cooling is carried out.
