BASIC BUNKERING SERIES
For most seafarers, the taking of bunkers is simply another routine operation. Care
will be taken of course, but beyond that, little is understood about where bunker
fuels come from, how they are bought and sold, the various methods of delivery
and, once on board, the impact these fuels may have on the efficient running of the
engine.
It is perhaps, because of this lack of understanding, that ships are increasingly
falling foul of poor quality or contaminated bunker fuels: often with disastrous
consequences. Moreover, even though care is usually taken during a bunkering
operation, the fact that over three-quarters of the total oil pollution of the sea
comes from bunkers, would suggest that proper procedures are not always in
place.
Basic Bunkering, is aimed at seafarers as well as shore personnel, is the most
comprehensive training package ever produced on the subject. Consisting of three
separate video packages complete with a trainer’s guide, all major aspects of the
bunkering process are highlighted. Introduced by a Presenter, each video employs
graphics and animation to illustrate the main messages.
Good Bunkering Practice Edition 2
Any bunkering operation is always a challenging and intense process for all onboard. Bunkering is often carried out when the ship's crew and engineering personnel are pressed for both time and manpower. Therefore, they must be properly trained, briefed and proficient in: pre-bunkering preparation, sampling and measurement during bunkering, the bunkering operation itself, post-bunkering operations and contingency plans.
Good Bunkering Practice Edition 2 is an updated programme to our very popular training programme - Good Bunkering Practice Edition 1. The new programme is aimed at all crew members and reflects the changes that have taken place over the last ten years in the bunkering market, in the technologies of sample taking and with the advent of MARPOL Annex VI regulations.
This programme outlines and complies with the international legislation designed to ensure safety, best practice and best performance at sea when bunkering.
BUNKERING OPERATIONS - SAFE OIL TRANSFER PROCEDURES
Code No 588
Time: 20 Mins
Remember the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. The
best prevention for oil spills during bunkering operations is crew training.
The video presents bunkering in 10 steps based on:
Good Seamanship
United States and Washington State regulations
International guidelines of the Singapore Bunkering Procedure, the European
Harbour Master’s Association and the ISO Technical Subcommittee on Bunkering.
In addition, more than a dozen transfer tips, timely reminders on handling oil safely,
are included.
The presentation emphasises proper procedures, communication and mooring
before, during & after a bunkering operation.
Applicable in all ports of the world, the clear message of the video will benefit
everyone involved in bunkering.
This part introduces a brief history of bunkering before describing today’s most
common bunker fuels. The buying and selling of bunkers is discussed along with the
vast number of people in the ‘chain.’ Importantly, the package illustrates the kind of
things that can go wrong with the bunkering operation and the amount of money
involved. The summary pays particular attention to the importance of correct fuel
measurement and sampling procedures.
This part deals largely with the technical components of bunker fuel and highlights
the many causes of contamination which often lead to fouling and corrosion of
engine components. Methods of purifying fuels are highlighted and the programme
contains a detailed section illustrating a range of simple on board fuel testing
procedures. As well as covering important health & safety issues, the package
makes mention of the often catastrophic effects that bunker fuels can have on the
environment.
This part demonstrates the correct methods of delivering bunkers from fuel barge,
road tanker and pipeline. The importance of pre-planning is emphasised along with
fuel measuring and sampling procedures; including an overview of the necessary
paperwork. The package highlights the preventive measures that should be taken to
avoid spillage and the emergency procedures required should a spillage occur.
