SALVAGE - A PRACTICAL GUIDE

     Code No 699

Time: 31 Mins

This training package is intended to provide a practical guide on how to proceed if the ship gets into a situation where assistance may be needed - if an engine failure means there’s a risk of grounding, for instance, or in case of fire. In all cases it is the Master who has final responsibility for deciding if assistance from a salvor is necessary. Where the ship is not in imminent danger, however, then time may permit consultation with the owner and an opportunity to seek the most favourable terms for the salvage operation. When danger is imminent then the decisions taken in the first hour or so are critical as things can go from bad to worse very quickly. In cases of this sort, the acceptance of an Open Form, commonly the Lloyd’s Open Form, LOF, is usually the best option.
