SEARCH AND RESCUE: CO-ORDINATION

    Code No 985

Time: XX Mins

This programme features reconstructions of events taken from real SAR incidents. They demonstrate the need for a clear understanding of correct procedures in the event of a disaster at sea, as legislated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and SOLAS.

The programme shows the correct SAR procedures to aid a successful outcome. It follows events from sending the initial distress call via the ship’s GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System), to the eventual arrival of the rescue services. It shows how keeping to the codes of practice and the co-ordination of the various agencies can all contribute to a favourable result.

The programme explains how to communicate with the rescue centres. It shows how the ship can provide assistance to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCC) during the distress situation, and what can be done by other ships responding to the distress call. Using computerised graphics, the programme shows the ocean areas covered by the GMDSS and the use of different radio frequencies and satellite systems – INMARSAT and COSPAR-SARSAT – via Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It also shows how an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) helped to search for and save the lives of crew members after their ship sank in difficult weather conditions.
