The video starts by outlining the basic techniques of resistance spot welding.
Extensive use of animation illustrates the three essential principles involving:
adjustment of welding current values - electrode force - and current flow time. The
effect of spot welds when these principles are correctly and incorrectly applied are
clearly shown. Examples of stationary and portable spot welding applications in
industry are included and the film concludes by indicating some of the problems
which arise in resistance welding: these will be dealt with in Resistance Welding -
Advanced which covers further variations of resistance welding.
After a brief review of the basic principles of resistance welding, this film continues
to describe variations used for different applications in industry. The configurations
- (shown by animation) and application (shown by live spots) - of indirect,
series, intermittent roll spot, stitch, projection, butt and flash butt resistance welding
- are illustrated.
The examples have been chosen to show how careful design for fabrication by
resistance welding can reduce component manufacturing costs. The film ends by
emphasising that, irrespective of the system used, the basic concept of resistance
welding remains the same.
