SEA NEWS - VOLUME 1

     Volume 1 Code No 949

Time: 25 Mins

Sea News is a news series presented in DVD in a popular magazine-style format. It combines documentary footage, interviews, dramatised reconstructions and animation, ensuring you are entertained and kept up to date with the latest industry developments.

The first edition of what will be a regular series begins with current issues, detailing the events of the recent ILO Maritime Labour Convention 2006. The topical debate features interviews with the people actively involved in the conference, discussing the impact of its action plan and how best to implement the requirements.

Sea News then moves to a dramatic reconstruction of a real life major collision incident, investigating the grave consequences often involved in such accidents. Studying the root and cost of poor teamwork and pilot error, the programme takes a look at ways we can prevent mistakes in the future.

Following on, Sea News reviews Computer Based Training (CBT) and asks whether this is the key to good training best practice. Talking to working seafarers, the programme considers CBT benefits, and constraints such as time, fatigue, and computer access.

Finally, Sea News concludes by examining different modes of Target Tracking Devices, and possible mistakes when using them. It looks at factors such as tidal flows, vision, and relevant vectors, analysing how each can affect collision avoidance decisions.

Sea News provides essential information and advancements in the world of shipping in a stimulating and interesting manner.

Increasing awareness to all that work in the industry, it covers the issues and events that affect you, your ship, and your livelihood- a must-see for every seafarer.

SEA NEWS - VOLUME 2

     Volume 2 Code No 961

Time: 25 Mins

Volume 2 of Sea News focuses on environmental issues. We examine the effect of climate change on maritime operations and the initiatives that have improved shipping's green credentials. With the protection of the environment in mind, our case study in this edition examines MARPOL violations involving Oily Water Separators.

We begin by considering some of the symptoms of climate change that are already being experienced, and the effects these could have on the shipping industry, both at sea and in port. We talk to Geert Koffeman of Smit Salvage about these issues and the often complex range of commodities that comprise cargo, particularly on container ships.

We then talk to Miguel Palomares, Director of the Environmental Division of the IMO, about the IMO's regulatory framework. Figures show that IMO initiatives over the past decade have been instrumental in steadily reducing oil spills and pollution levels, making shipping the cleanest method of transport when compared with the environmental effect of moving an equivalent quantity of cargo by alternative means.

With the polar ice cap showing real evidence of shrinking, we look at the possibility of future transcontinental sea routes via the Arctic, before taking a close look at why regulations for the prevention of oil pollution continue to be infringed. Our case study in this edition concerns Oily Water Separators and violations of MARPOL. With the assistance of Faz Peermohamed, a partner in the London law firm Ince & Co., we examine the reasons and consequences of non-compliance with the regulations.

Finally departing from environmental issues, the programme shifts focus to highlight the dangers facing seafarers on passage from the gangway to the dock gates.
