The GMDSS system plays a key role in ensuring the safety of seafarers on ships of
all types and it is essential that the relevant officers on board are familiar with its
capabilities and know how to use it in an emergency.
Who is the course designed for:
This course is intended for all deck officers who may be required to use GMDSS.
Course Pre-requisites:
None.
Course Objectives:
This course supports international standards of training on GMDSS (IMO Model
Course, Number 1.25) and provides the underpinning knowledge required for the
effective use of GMDSS equipment.
This distance learning course will prepare users for certification at a recognised
nautical college where use of specific equipment must be demonstrated. It has been
prepared in collaboration with Blackpool & the Fylde College.
This course can also be used as a refresher course for experienced officers.

Users will acquire the knowledge required to comply with current regulations and
will be provided with a record of this training.

Mode of Delivery:
This course is delivered using computer-based training. The material is supplied on
CD-ROM and students follow on-screen instructions to get started. The program
contains video clips, animation, still photographs and English language narration.
The course text, as narrated, can be shown onscreen if required.
Course Duration:
It is estimated that 20 Guided Learning Hours (GLHs) are required to complete the
course. GLHs include the time needed to follow the programme on the computer,
take the tests, plus the time needed for additional reading.
