ECDIS (Electronic Charts Display Information Systems) Training Course
Code No 871
Electronic Charts are becoming an important part of navigating at sea. However, not all electronic charts and their display systems may be used as a primary basis for navigation. Therefore, this course offers a comprehensive and understandable explanation of current international law, and explains the differences between the various types of Electronic Charts with particular emphasis on Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS). Furthermore, the course provides simulated exercises that allow the trainee to gain hands on experience using a "virtual" ECDIS. Upon completion, the trainee will understand the benefits and limitations of ECDIS, and will have a practical grasp of how ECDIS can be used for navigation and passage planning.
This course is intended for shipboard personnel who are responsible for navigation and passage planning. After completing the course, the trainee will know about electronic charts and understand how ECDIS operate. They will know the legal requirements for using these navigation systems and be able to recognise and deal with faults.
The course details the capabilities and operational functionality of ECDIS, how to select and interpret the display of data and how to recognise and deal with a malfunction. It provides understanding of the capabilities of electronic charts and the importance of all navigational aids and keeping a good lookout.
