Distance Learning Courses

A formal learning activity which occurs when students and instructor are separated by geographic distance or by time, often supported by communications technology such as television, videotape, computers, Internet, mail or email.

The main benefits of Videotel’s distance learning courses are:

  1. Clear learning objectives – by constructing the course modules around precise and detailed information
  2. Convenient – seafarers can study at times when it suits them and their work schedules
  3. Cost-effective – saving valuable time that would have been taken up ashore
  4. Engrossing - generates an interactive and visually simulating learning process through video, narration, text, graphics and animation
  5. Engaging – seafarers partake in application activities such as case studies, portfolio work, role-playing, problem solving and assessment questioning techniques
  6. Consistency – through the auditing (by Flag States) and thoroughness of Videotel’s course administration services
  7. Support – a dedicated course tutor is available to give advice, as necessary

The courses are developed through a Steering Group, which comprises individuals with different expertise in a range of maritime fields. In conjunction with Videotel’s in-house multimedia team the courses are then created to the highest possible standard and incorporate the latest multimedia design techniques.

Courses are delivered either by CD-ROM, as part of a Videotel library rental scheme, or are incorporated within the "Videotel On Demand" system (VOD) – a stand-alone computer system which allows seafarers to access hundreds of Videotel’s safety and technical training products. And, with the latest advances of broadband access to shipping, Videotel is already supplying web-deliverable courses.
