Videotel launches new onboard library scheme

VIDEOTEL has launched an innovative new onboard training system, Videotel On Demand (VOD). The new system gives crews instant access to Videotel's entire training library of videos and computer based training packages wherever they are in the world.

"Until now, videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs have been the most convenient methods of delivering training at sea," says Mike Potts, Videotel's general manager. "But space onboard is limited, and even the best-equipped ships could carry only a fraction of the training resources that are available. Now, Videotel on Demand means that crews can access any training package, program or course at any time. They can access the most suitable training course for their needs; a big advance in terms of continuing professional development. They can instantly find out how to deal with any problem or weakness that arises onboard or within the fleet at short notice."

The VOD system provides instant access to Videotel's full range of more than 500 videos covering everything from personal health and safety training to navigation, emergency procedures, and security precautions. It is easy to use, with a simple menu interface that opens any video or CBT with just four clicks of the mouse. The menu is divided up according to STCW functional areas and subjects, so users can find the video they need even without knowing its name. Users have a personal password to log in to the system, which tracks training.

VOD is based on a dedicated desktop terminal. The system is supplied with Videotel's entire library ready loaded, and can be updated via DVD downloads. Workbooks and documentation are included on the system, and can be exported to another computer and printed using the special VOD data stick (VODstick). The system is managed by an onboard supported with remote backup provided by Videotel. It can also be linked to the fleet training administrator in the client's office or supported by Videotel.

"Providing proper crew training is vital to improving safety at sea," says William O'Neil, president of Videotel. "By making it easier for crews to study onboard, Videotel on Demand has an important role to play in preventing accidents and protecting seafarers and the maritime environment."

The first company to place VOD units on their ships is P&O Nedlloyd. "The VOD boxes have been very well received on board," comments Captain Nigel Lehmann-Taylor, marine manager of PONL. "Now we have the ability to monitor which packages have been viewed and by whom. So far we can see a number of packages have been studied which we did not previously have in the Videotel libraries onboard". He also comments "We are confident that VOD adds value to our onboard training programme and that our officers and ratings will recognise the opportunity to continue their professional development."

  • Videotel Marine International is the market leader in the provision of quality computer, video and DVD-based training packages and courses in many languages for the maritime industry. The company provides training packages through long-term library rental schemes. Videotel currently offers over 500 titles, including a range of Flag State approved distance-learning courses. 55 of Videotel's training packages have recently been recognised by IMarEST as suitable for continuing professional development.
