September 2006 Videotel Marine International was in Athens for the opening of our new office and also for the product launch of Videotel’s Environmental Officer Training Course. Videotel invited clients to a well attended cocktail reception, held in the prestigous Yacht Club of Greece, Mikrolimano. The launch also included programmes It’s Not Worth It! Maritime Pollution Offences, and Incident Investigation, Analysis and Reporting – courses in support of TMSA, and a special presentation by Videotel’s President Mr. William O’Neil, "Ten Year Awards of Excellence", in recognition of long standing clients’ commitment to Videotel. Also in Athens, during that week (21st – 27th September) Videotel Chairman Len Holder attended the Mare Forum conference 2006 entitled "Everything Flows". The aim of Mare Forum 2006 in Athens was to bring together the authors of the EU Green Paper on Integrated Maritime Policy, along with high level political and industry figures to examine how best such policies can be developed in practical terms. Many within the maritime industry believe that the “joined -up thinking” implied by such a policy could be both important, useful, and facilitating, as Commissioner Borg has said, "The development of diverse and sometimes conflicting sea-based activities will thus contribute to economic development without compromising the welfare of future generations”. September 2006 HRH Princess Royal promotes World Maritime Day
HRH The Princess Royal bought a touch of royalty to the HMS Wellington on Thursday 28th September, for the UK’s first ever World Maritime Day, and Videotel were there - not only to honour the vital contribution the shipping industry makes to world trade- but also to donate one of our safety libraries to the Honourable Company Of Master Mariners, this in turn was handed by HRH The Princess Royal to the London Nautical School. At about 15.25, she presented the Videotel Safety Library to the London Nautical School with the help of Videotel’s Chairman Len Holder. HRH The Princess Royal passed the library across saying: “The Honourable Company is pleased to offer London Nautical School a library of DVDs and computer-based training material for use as a learning resource. The library includes professional, human factor and environmental subjects that can be explored in academic and practical teaching exercises. The library was donated by Videotel Marine International, a corporate member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.”
World Maritime Day has been running for a while but it is the first time that the UK has staged the event, although the International Maritime Organization has always been heavily involved in the day and has always hosted the evening party celebrations. A significant number of VIP guests visited the event throughout the day, these included: Mr Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, who opened the event, Sir Jonathon Band, the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral, and Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who founded EasyJet, and of course, HRH The Princess Royal. The aim of the event was to showcase the contribution made by UK based institutions in support of the international shipping industry. 34 leading shipping industry and associated international organisations were there promoting the latest technological developments. Visitors from local schools were invited who got the chance to meet with and talk to key players in the industry, drive ship simulators and generally gain a valuable and unique insight into the transportation of goods by sea. The event was not open to the general public due to a maximum of 250 people on board the ship at any time. Instead it was open to invited guests from the diplomatic and political areas, business community and the media. Find out about World Maritime Day 2007. |
