May 2006 Videotel and West of England Launch Practical Guide to Hatch Cover Operations
LEADING maritime training provider Videotel Marine International in association with West of England Insurance Services (Luxembourg) SA have launched a new training package designed to increase awareness of - and provide a sound foundation for - the safe operation and maintenance of mechanical hatch covers. Videotel chairman Len Holder says, "Many accidents to personnel take place during the opening and closing of hatch covers. Defective hatch covers can also cause serious damage to cargo and, in extreme cases, may even result in the loss of the vessel. These are issues which need to be addressed urgently, and that is the motivation behind this new training program." The program highlights the correct operation and maintenance of mechanical hatch covers, with particular emphasis on safety. It consists of a video/DVD, a booklet and an interactive multimedia CD-ROM. Viewers will see the fatal consequences of incorrect hatch cover operations and the damage that water leakage can cause to cargo. Animated graphics are used throughout to demonstrate the design and operation of these sophisticated pieces of modern engineering. West of England loss prevention director Mark Williams says, "It is evident from claims statistics that the safe operation and maintenance of hatch covers are topics which need to be re-emphasised. This package provides clear guidance on how the risk of personal injury may be minimised and shows how simple precautions may reduce the possibility of cargo damage caused by hatch cover leakage." In addition to stressing the importance of 'steel-to-steel' contact, the program illustrates and explains principle equipment such as bearing pads, rubber packing, compression bars and cleats. An expert surveyor points out typical problems that may arise and highlights correct inspection and maintenance routines. Demonstrations of hose and ultrasound tests are also included. Len Holder says, "This program includes the very latest thinking on the subject, including guidance from the Nautical Institute's most recent publication on hatch covers. Videotel believes that it will quickly be an essential reference tool for all seafarers." For more information click here.
