As ECDIS systems are becoming an increasingly significant part of maritime navigation, the course provides a clear and comprehensive explanation of current international law and explains the differences between various types of electronic charts. Captain Milind Karkhanis, Videotel Vice President, comments: "The course includes exercises that simulate some of the key functions of using an ECDIS system. Completing the course gives an understanding of both the benefits and limitations of ECDIS, together with a practical grasp of how it can be used for navigation and passage planning." This interactive, computer-based training course consists of five modules: an introduction to ECDIS, Understanding ECDIS, two modules on using ECDIS, and the exercises. The course is presented in English on CD-ROM using short video sequences, graphics and interactive elements. It can be undertaken in seven hours of study and when completion of the final test has been authenticated, Videotel will issue a standard course certificate. Completion of optional assignments is acknowledged by the award of an ECDIS Advanced Course Certificate. Videotel’s ECDIS training course has been designed for shipboard personnel who have responsibility for, and already have a good knowledge of navigation and passage planning. The course can be undertaken on board ship or ashore and is for individual self-study. Videotel’s courses continue to be of a high standard, Risk Assessment at Sea Training Course has recently been given full approval from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK). 26 February 2008 Continuing to win awards!Videotel’s commitment to continually meet training needs has been proven yet again with two of their latest programmes winning acclaim. Videotel’s hard work was rewarded at the film and media arts Insight Awards 2007, with Engine Room Waste Management: Oily Water & Separators receiving an Award for Excellence for "Creativity in an Educational Video". This exciting instalment is part one of four programmes covering the practical details of handling and recording the management of engine room waste onboard. Each detailed programme highlights the importance of following correct procedures and stresses the need to fill out all paperwork accurately to avoid penalties and possible detention. Oily Water & Separators focuses on the sources of oily water, the working principles of the separator and monitor, and controlling the content, so that the separator and oil content monitor can operate effectively. It also includes important features of their operation and maintenance, as well as information on the new generation of separators meeting MEPC 107(49). Videotel’s LNG Training Course- Meeting SIGTTO Competency Guidelines course also won an Award for Excellence, under "Concept: Interactive Media". This effective training program also recently received a Certificate of Compliance from Bureau Veritas (BV). Videotel wins more awards 27th September 2007 World Maritime Day 27 September 2007Sea's the Future
World Maritime Day 27 September 2007 Central London landmark hosts international celebration of shipping Over 90% of all of the world's trade is carried by ships. From computers to clothes, food to oil, shipping is vital to the global economy. Shipping is the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation and the industry offers a wealth of careers both at sea and ashore. On September 27th 2007 the historic ship Wellington, berthed between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges, will be the venue for the celebrations to mark shipping's contribution to society on World Maritime Day. The event will showcase the positive steps taken by UK based maritime institutions in reducing their impact upon the marine environment. UK based organisations have taken the lead in this area and so this highlights the importance of this sector to UK Plc. The whole of the maritime industry, for example, contributed over £37 billion to the UK's economy in 2006. 38 leading shipping industry and associated international organisations will promote the latest technological developments and visitors, including young people from local schools, will get a chance to meet key players in the industry, drive ship simulators and gain a unique insight into the transportation of goods by sea. Attendees include HRH The Duke of York, the shipping minister, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, the only United Nations agency to be headquartered in London, the Lord Mayor of London, the Lord Mayor of Westminster and the Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency. 24 July 2007 Videotel launches online access to its award-winning training coursesVideotel Marine International has launched Courses on the Web, providing both companies and individuals with 24-hour-a-day online access to its award-winning training courses. More courses for online access are to follow. Raal Harris, Head of Multimedia and Project Developer, Videotel Marine International says: "We live in a world where we must follow the different directions in which new inventions, discoveries and climates lead us. Continual developments in technology are changing the way we work, making tasks easier and information more readily available. Here at Videotel Marine International we understand the need to keep up with these changes and are delighted to be able to offer our popular courses online". The courses Safety Officer, Incident Investigation: Analysis and Reporting and Environmental Officer are accredited by the Nautical Institute and have full Panama Maritime Authority approval. The Shipboard Security Officer course is approved by the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) as well as by the Panama Maritime Authority. Videotel's training initiatives have received widespread recognition in terms of both practical content and production standards. The course Safety Officer was awarded a certificate for Creative Excellence by the US International Film and Video Festival. Incident Investigation: Analysis and Reporting recently received the Silver Remi Award at WorldFest Houston, USA, as well as the Award for Excellence in the Multimedia & Interactive Publications category at the Apex Awards 2007 (Awards for Publication Excellence). 23rd June 2007 Videotel looks to cruise and ferry sector with new training programmeVideotel Marine International has this month expanded its training programme portfolio with the launch of How Can I Help You? Passengers with Disabilities - designed to educate cruise and ferry personnel about how to provide good customer service to passengers with disabilities, as well as the importance of taking appropriate actions in emergency procedures. The training package is available in DVD and accompanying workbook format or as a Videotel interactive computer-based training package. Says Capt Mike Potts, General Manager, Videotel: "In the highly competitive cruise and ferry business, meeting customer needs is paramount. In order to deliver superior service to passengers, a ship's crew must first be properly trained and motivated. However, there are still a number of passengers - many with disabilities - for whom the ferry and cruise service experience is far from first class." How Can I Help You? Passengers with Disabilities illustrates the many issues faced by passengers that require additional support from the crew. By following the journey of three protagonists with different disabilities, the programme points out the need to treat those passengers with special requirements with particular care to ensure that their voyage is a first-class experience and that they feel safe. The first character, Paul, is hard of hearing. By showing interest and asking questions, crew members are able to establish Paul's preferred means of communication and reassure him that, in an emergency, he is safe in their hands. Similar, sensitive approaches by crew members also have a positive effect on the comfort and wellbeing of Linda, who uses a wheelchair, and Margaret, who makes regular ferry trips with her guide dog. "How Can I Help You? Passengers with Disabilities shows that the most important issue impacting a passenger's overall voyage experience is not necessarily the standard of facilities onboard a ship but the attitude of the crew and how they approach an individual's specific needs," says Mr Potts. "By highlighting the need to use the correct procedures when dealing with people with disabilities, this new training programme provides valuable assistance to ferry/cruise operators and crews who wish to ensure peace of mind and comfort for all their passengers." Essential for all crew members, the main topics covered are:
