Tech Note 1:

Collision Avoidance v1.7 is recording the Final Assessment percentage, within the Rules section, incorrectly.

Can I trial the program for more than 30 days?

If you have exceeded the 30 day trial period and feel you have not had enough time to evaluate the program, we can extend the trial period. This is done on a case by case basis, please follow the instructions for "How do I unlock the program". Please mention you are requesting a trial extension in your correspondence to Videotel Support.

How do I unlock the program?

If you purchased the program or rented it as part of your Library Rental Scheme, then you can install and unlock the program on one computer. Please complete the following steps:

1. Install the program on the most suitable computer for training
2. Start the program
3. Click the "Unlock” button on the first window

4. Record your “Hardware Fingerprint”, this is unique for each computer

5. Send the following information to Videotel by e-mail, telephone or fax:

  • Program name and version
  • “Hardware Fingerprint”
  • Company or college name (and location, if more than one)
  • Ship name & IMO number (if applicable)

Can I install and unlock the program on more than one computer?

Each purchased or rented program is licensed for installation on one computer. If you would like to install and unlock the program on additional computers, please contact for information about purchasing additional licenses.

What do I enter for User Name and User ID when the program starts?

The User Name and ID you enter keeps your records separate from those of other users on the same computer. We suggest you enter your name as it is shown on your Seaman's Identity Card. If your company has issued a training ID number, please use it. Otherwise, choose an ID that is unique, will not change and contains any combination of letters and numbers (maximum 15), perhaps your Seaman’s ID Number.

I purchased ShipSim with Collision Avoidance. Are ShipSim manuals available?

ShipSim has 3 manuals, which are available in PDF format. To read PDF files you need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available at www.adobe.com.

ShipSim Setup.pdf (433 KB)
ShipSim Simulator.pdf (1452 KB)
ShipSim Exercise Editor.pdf (1084 KB)

Alternatively, you can download a zipped file containing all 3 manuals: ShipSim Manuals.zip (2751KB)

Is a user manual available?

Yes. It is available in both Word and Acrobat Reader formats.

Tech Note 1:

Thank you to Captain Cichowski for spotting this bug.

Collision Avoidance v1.7 is recording the Final Assessment percentage, within the Rules section, incorrectly. Instead of the percentage correct, it is saving the total correct with a "%" character appended to the value.

Example 1:
If a user scores 40 out of 50, CA records this as 40% correct, instead of 80% correct.

Example 2:
If a user scores -10 out of 50, CA records this as -10% correct, instead of -20% correct.

It is possible for a user to receive a negative score, because Collision Avoidance uses the following scoring system.

+1 point if a user answers a question correctly
+0 if a user selects "Don't know"
-1 point if a user answers a question incorrectly

Final Assessment information shown on-screen is accurate.

Solution:

Replacing the existing "rules.dxr" file will correct the problem.

Please complete the following steps:

1. Install Collision Avoidance v1.7, if you have not done so already.
2. Locate and delete the file "rules.dxr". It is located within the "Rules" folder, in the Collision Avoidance installation folder. The default location is "C:\Program Files\ColAv\Rules".
3. Download the file CAv1.7.1.zip (1.3 MB) to a convenient location on your computer.
4. Unzip CAv1.7.1.zip and save the new "rules.dxr" file into the folder in step 2.
